KAMARA KATTU MOVIE REVIEW

The story of Kamara Kattu revolves around four students Sriram, Yuvan, Raksha Raj and Manisha Jith. In their school ages, the two pairs fall in love with each other. Unlike the normal love story, Kamar Kattu takes a different angle in love.

The guys who fare well in school do not fare well in college. On the other hand, the girls who lag in school do well at college and these girls inspire the boys to do better in exams. Until then they promise not to meet the boys. The boys who miss their girls badly do not concentrate on their studies and as a result they fail. Meanwhile the girls join their college and gets to know the two rich guys and start moving closely to them. Has the girls changed their minds? What happens when the school-friends-cum-lovers comes to know of their new boyfriends? Would they tolerate? Or would they leave them alone? What happens to them in the end. And what is that horror element in the movie? Who dies and for what? The story revolves with turns and twists with thrilling suspense. Director Ramki Ramakrishnan has took a different path in story-telling with Kamara Kattu.

The two young heroes Pasanga fame Sriram and Sattai fame Yuvan have performed the given roles in perfect way. In school life as well as college going, both of them have done a good job for their roles. The young heroines have made justice to their roles.

Kamara Kattu’s different storyline is a plus to the movie. The twist with horror elements that comes after the interval makes audiences wonder what would happen next.

Faizal gives audiences the real musical feel of the movie. Cinematographer Sridhar has done a great job for the movie.

The screenplay is somewhat loose in the movie. Should have knitted tightly.

Music plays major role in such horror movie genres. Some more efforts could have been put.

Kamara Kattu is a good entertainer with some horror elements.

PURAMPOKKU ENGIRA PODHUVUDAMAI MOVIE REVIEW

Conveying communism ideologies in commercial cinema is director SP Jananathan's style and his recent film Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai is no exception.

Balusamy (Arya) and Kuyili (Karthika Nair) are communist comrades who fight for people but according to the law they are terrorists. As Indian government is depositing wastes through weapons, Baalu decides to create awareness by attacking the Indian military as a suicide bomber(??) Unfortunately his mission fails and the Delhi court sentences him with capital punishment. He is handed over to Macaulay (Shaam) and is brought to Chennai prison.

Macaulay is a smart police officer who believes that capital punishment is the only way to eradicate criminals in the country. And now he is looking for an experienced hangman, when Yemalingam (Vijay Sethupathi) is introduced. Yemalingam comes from a family of hangmen and is a drunkard who has his own psychological fear to hang prisoners. He joins hands with Kuyili after hearing various stories of Balusamy's past to sketch an escape plan for Baalu. Does their plan succeed, is what the film is all about.

As usual SP Jananathan's dialogues are splendid, he casually spill all his communism ideologies in every possible scenes but as the concept of the film itself is universal, the execution should have been top notch and flawless but here things are progressively poor and amateurish.

The first half of the film moves at snail pace as Jananathan introduce his characters through songs, long lectures and some stupid scenes set in Ladakh and Rajasthan. But the screenplay is not interesting enough to connect all those ideas written on paper. Not just the screenplay, the film faces some serious logical loopholes, to point out Arya's escape plan and way he goes about it is not convincing.

Among all the three lead actors, Vijay Sethupathi is top notch as he steals the show with his comic one liner and often elevates the energy level of this middling movie. Arya's character of Balusamy is a powerful one but sadly his body language and dialogue delivery fails to impress. It is a terrific opportunity for Karthika Nair who sinks her teeth into the character. She not only looks confident but her agile body and expressive eyes convey a lot. Shaam makes a fabulous comeback as the tough no-nonsense cop.

Cinematography by Ekambaram is effective in the train chase sequence and he has also majestically shot in Binny Mills the prison portions. Production designer Selvakumar deserves a big applause and his work in the film will definitely bring him huge accolades. Though Srikanth Deva's background score is pulsating, it's not necessary to fill every scene with heavy scores while newcomer Varshan's songs are strictly functional.

DEMONTE COLONY MOVIE REVIEW

Ajay Gnanamuthu who has had his direction lessons from A R Murugadoss makes his directorial debut through Demonte Colony, a supernatural horror thriller.

Demonte Colony is one of the top haunted areas in Chennai in Alwarpet area and Ajay has used this place to weave a really scary tale involving four friends. At a time when horror-humor genre rules the turnstiles, Demonte Colony is completely fear centric and does not deviate anywhere. The duration of one hundred and fifteen minutes also helps the team to totally focus on their main premise.

Talking much about the story of any film in a review spoils the fun and when it happens to be a scary thriller, it becomes all the more important not to divulge things. So let’s just say Demonte Colony is about four friends who are basically up to no good but tangle themselves in serious mess, the fall out of which is the film all about.

A lone uninhabited haunted house in pouring rain, beam of light through a candle, screechy noise somewhere, doors and windows behaving weirdly, a mirror that shows a different reflection, sudden burst of sounds are some of the fixtures in a ghost thriller and Demonte Colony also has them. But in addition to these, Ajay brings a few features which are different that makes his debut flick stand out.

Arulnithi, Ramesh Selvan along with debutants Abhishek and Sanath take on the role of four friends. They are apt for their respective characters and Abhishek among the new entrants, makes a mark. The Finnish actor is perfect casting with his sinisterly looks and facial twitches.

The screenplay and writing is pretty neat and has the audience’s attention right through. The unexpected twists shake you up and Ajay keeps us shocked on a regular interval. There is a lot of intelligence revealed in the writing. In the guise of bowing down to commercial elements, the team has not taken a detour and has mostly adhered to the main line. That said, the presence of the lady character in the film could have been justified better although it was a breather in the heavy scheme of things. When it comes to a horror thriller, it is imperative that all the knots are untangled properly which could have resulted in a product of sharper finesse.

Demonte Colony is high on fear quotient and scene after scene, especially, in the second half wallops you in unexplainable and paranormal activities going on in the screen. The main man who gives you this feel is undoubtedly music director Keba Jeremiah who with his powerful background score pushes you to the edge of the seat with your heart in your mouth.

Cinematographer Aravinnd Singh’s contribution to bringing out the eerie feel of the film with muted lights is significant. Art director Santhanam must be mentioned for creating the period feel with his set designs. Editor Bhuvan Srinivasan has worked on the cuts diligently.

Toting up, Demonte Colony made by talented technicians is worth a watch when you want to get spooked.

36 VAYADHINILE MOVIE REVIEW

Jyothika's comeback movie 36 Vayadhinile, directed by Rosshan Andrrews and produced by Suriya's 2D Entertainment has released today. The movie casts Jyothika, Rahman and Abhirami and many other familiar actors like Delhi Ganesh, Devardhashini and Ilavarasu. The much awaited movie has music by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography by Diwakaran and editing by Mahesh Narayanan with dialogues written by Viji. After 8 years, Jyothika has chosen this script for a comeback. Was it a good choice? Read along to know...

The story revolves around Jyothika (Vasanthi) who is 36 years old and works as a clerk in the revenue department. She is not a dedicated person at work but as a wife and mother, she always gives her best but her husband and daughter take her for granted. Rahman (Tamilselvan) plans to go to Ireland for a better quality of life and their daughter is excited to study abroad but Jyothika does not clear the job interview which irritates Rahman more. Finally, he takes their daughter and leaves her in India.

On the other hand, the President of the Nation wants to meet her as he comes to know that she is the inspiration behind a question posed by her daughter. Naturally, not so confident Vasanthi faints in front of him which results in lot of humiliation and this devastates her. At this juncture, her friend Abhirami (Susan) talks to her to remind herself of all her dreams during the college days. She asks her to re- discover herself and prove her true abilities. This transforms Vasanthi and what she does to herself post this and how she regains respect from her family is the rest of the story.

36 Vayadhinile is a feel good film that will make you leave the Cinema hall with a smile in the heart. A family entertainer that reminds how easily we overlook the woman in the family who sacrifices all her passion for the sake of husband and children and an eye opener to the women to not put an end to their dreams. The movie flows like a clear pool of water and right mixture of humour is added to avoid it being more dramatic. Santhosh Narayanan's music adds more flavour to the movie.

Jyothika carries the movie on her shoulders with ease and her acting is so mature compared to her earlier movies. It is a great pleasure to watch her on screen and she has made a wise choice by choosing this as her comeback movie. Her comeback can't be more beautiful than this. It would be great to see her on screen often.

36 Vayadhinile in one line - A movie to be watched and discussed with family
